The Best Dressers For Bedroom
October 10, 2009
The dresser for the bedroom as an essential piece of furniture has been much in demand for centuries. Traditionally, a gentleman’s dresser for his bedroom was made of oak or mahogany, usually with two top drawers for stockings, gloves, cravats handkerchiefs and other accouterments. On the top would be placed lace covers and a mirror, that should ideally match the wood of the dresser. The remaining three drawers would be single and capacious enough to carry shirts, woollens and breeches.
Ladies dressers for bedroom were normally made of cherry or walnut and often featured only single drawers. The defining feature of a ladies dresser is the larger bottom drawer which was specifically designed for her to store linens and fine clothes for the day she became wed. Most dressers contain four drawers but they can have as many as eight or even twelve. Among the most famous cabinet makers of quality English dressers was Thomas Chippendale, whose fine cabinets are still much sought after.
Regency, Victorian and Edwardian dressers for bedroom are all made of wood with a quality French polish on the front. The back was usually left unvarnished. Often the drawers would have locks. Today, dressers come in a wide variety of materials including the modern favourite MDF - micro density fibreboard - with a woodstain veneer on the top and sides. This hardwearing easy care engineered wood product can be made in a variety of shapes and sizes.
The Swedish firm Ikea has specialised in supplying such dressers for the bedroom in low cost flat pack format for self assembly at home. In days of old you would have to struggle up the stairs with the weighty pre crafted dresser.
The emphasis for modern dressers is to de-clutter bedrooms and create a harmonious themed design scheme within the bedroom, and often, bedroom units, including the wardrobe, overhead cupboards, dressing table and dresser will be made with one design theme and one colour so that everything is colour co-ordinated. Many newer dressers for bedroom have more storage space than dressers of old.
Modern dressers still feature mirrors but they are usually placed as “vanity stations” with a slot for a low stool or chair. The cabinets and drawers flank the space for the chair. The spacious work tops of modern dressers are designed for keeping cosmetics and other trinkets on them without appearing messy or cluttered.
