The Benefit of a Car Seatbelt

May 25, 2010

Why are seatbelts so important and why are they the law? Ever wonder how they work and why lawmakers are so adamant about people wearing them? These are questions that most of us never think about, but ones that we should certainly ponder the answers to. Seatbelts are designed to restrain wearers in the event of a collision. In a vehicle accident, the motion of the vehicle is stopped abruptly and it is usually faster than the body can adjust. This means your body continues to move forward even after the vehicle has stopped. By stopping the impact that an accident may cause, much potential damage is averted in the process.

If you aren’t wearing a seatbelt, your body will not be restrained and momentum will carry you forward. You will then impact with whatever is before you, no matter if it is a steering wheel or windshield. Think about the impact that can take place when there’s nothing to prevent you from flying forward. It’s certainly a scary thought and you can imagine the damage that may occur as a result.
