How to Increase Traffic Your Website

May 7, 2010

If you’re the exhibitionist type, you might want to attempt to go viral. Going viral is when something spreads around the internet like wild fire. People share viral videos and memes via email, Twitter, Facebook, and many other social media outlets. This will cause a huge spike in traffic, and hopefully some of the people will stick. You can start your viral movement by spreading the word yourself using your own Facebook profile, Twitter account, and social bookmarking sites like Digg.com And StumbleUpon. For it to catch on, it better be insanely funny, or impossibly stupid; that’s the type of thing that tends to go viral.

You can also capture search engine traffic using SEO. On page SEO is the process of optimizing your existing website for the search engines. This involves ensuring that you’ve used searchable keywords and phrases in your content, that you’ve filled out your metadata, increasing your page load-times, and structuring your site in a manor that website crawlers find easy to read; this means avoiding complicated and messy code. Ranking high in the search engines with intention gets your website in front of people searching for your topics of choice.

Another way to get people to notice your content is by writing articles for larger, more authoritative sites; EzineArticles.com is a perfect example of that. Many people read this website, and hopefully they will find what I’m saying interesting and valuable. This will establish me as an authority on my subjects, and people will seek out my website. There are many sites that will allow you to write for them so you can get your content in front of the appropriate audience. In addition to building authority and an audience, many sites will allow you to link back to your own site. This is called a backlink, and is also a valuable factor in search engine optimization.
