How to find Debt Consolidation Company Ads

March 22, 2010

You can figure out which debt counseling companies are right for you by looking at a few ads, though, and by looking for a few key phrases:

•”Free consultation.” Debt companies offering a free consultation are a huge plus, because they offer you free counseling and a chance to see what the company is really like. In fact, you can take advantage of the free consultation at several companies to compare different companies and to get a sense of how different companies would approach your debt. Then, you can select the company that offers you the choices and counseling that you think would help you best.

•”Non-profit.” Debt consolidating companies that list themselves as “non-profit” do sometimes make money, but their non-profit designation means that creditors are sometimes more willing to work with the company. When creditors forgive the interest on a loan via a non-profit credit counseling service, tax laws allow the lenders to get some of their money back through counseling. Some people argue that this makes non-profit credit counseling companies slightly more effective in reducing your interest rates and even principal balances.

•”Privacy policy.” You should always read the privacy policy of any debt company you give your name and telephone number to. The company should never give your name and address to any third party. They should also not send you unsolicited advertising.

•”About us.” Always read about the company, including when it was founded, who founded it, and who runs the company. This can help you understand whether the company you are considering is reputable and established.

•”Services offered.” A reputable debt consolidation company should offer you debt consolidation options. Be wary of any company that tried to push all their clients into one program, regardless of clients’ different needs.
