How To Earn Money From Google Adsense

July 21, 2009

AdSense is the advertising program Google offers for people who want to monetize their websites. The companion program is AdWords, which is primarily utilized by businesses looking to promote their products. For the webmaster, unless you are selling something, you will probably only be interested in AdSense, as that is what gives you money and not takes it.

There are some misconceptions about how to make money with AdSense. For one, you can never click your own ads. This can get you banned immediately, and any earnings you had accrued prior will disappear as well. While you technically can ask people to click your ads without penalty, it is unethical and you would never make much money doing that anyway. When it comes to AdSense, put yourself in the advertiser’s shoes and think what you would want. You want each person who comes to your website to be a qualified lead who has a fairly good chance of making a purchase or taking action. If you think from this perspective, you will not only act in an ethical manner, but you will make more money as well.

To make the most money with AdSense, you need to design your website around a viable keyphrase. This means that the keyphrase has a relatively high search volume on Google (since that is where you will derive your traffic from) and a good cost-per-click. You can find the CPC and search volume of keyphrases on the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.

Some people only pick keywords that have very high CPCs. After all, there are keywords out there that can pay more than one or even two dollars per click. However, these keywords are often very competitive, and if you target them, you will not have much success. With any high paying keyword, you are essentially guaranteed to make a small amount of money, but if you are shooting for true success, then you need to take something that might pay a little less per click, but has more overall potential.

By developing a quality website with interesting and keyword-rich content, you can get a lot of traffic and maintain a high click-through rate. It can take a few months before a website takes off, but if you have chosen a good keyphrase and have worked hard, you will see amazing rewards.
