Everything You Wanted to Know About Funeral Flowers
October 28, 2009
Flowers are a good way to express sympathy in a way that words cannot. It shows the person that you care and are sympathetic to what they are going through. It is also a way of showing respect to the deceased.
A florist will always add a sympathy card with contact information on the back that will be recorded by the funeral home. The grieving families will appreciate this so they will know who to send acknowledgements to.
For the passing of immediate family members or close relatives or friends, it is appropriate to send casket sprays, crosses, wreaths, standing sprays or large funeral baskets. For the passing of a business associate or an acquaintance, funeral baskets, fresh flower arrangements, green or blooming plants or dish gardens are appropriate.
A casket spray is the flowers placed on top of a casket. Usually a half casket spray is used for an open casket, a full casket spray is used for a closed casket. For a memorial service, a vase or a basket is appropriate. The flowers can be something the deceased loved, or just a mixture of all types of flowers that are appealing. Usually flowers for a female would be more feminine and those for a male would be of a more masculine variety.
Flowers can be sent to the visitation, the church, or service and also at the grave site. They can be placed on a tripod stand or easel or in a funeral basket. Sometimes a funeral home will place a basket or a vase on a pedestal when available. If flowers are being sent after the funeral service, it is very appropriate to send the flowers to the deceased person’s family members at their home.
A fireside basket is a low handled basket which is normally placed on the floor near the casket at the service. This is sent to the funeral home or church. A lovely arrangement can be made in this type of basket for the home as well. A regular basket of flowers can always be used as well. This would usually be a large basket with a variety of flowers that is sent to either the funeral home or home of the deceased, or sent to the deceased family members.
Plants and dish gardens are often sent to the funeral home or the home of the deceased family. Blooming or green plants are also appropriate. This gives the family something they can keep. A “cross” of flowers can be made on dry or wet shaped foam or out of willow branches. There are many varieties to choose from. These are very formal and can be sent to the funeral home or the church where the service will be held.
A “heart” of flowers can also be made on dry or wet heart shaped foam. Sometimes white flowers will have red flowers running through them symbolizing “a bleeding heart.”
Flowers for inside the casket consist of a smaller arrangement of flowers that is placed inside the casket. Examples of these are nosegays, satin crosses, satin pillows, and satin hearts. These are usually sent by the youngest family members or grandchildren. A large arrangement in the shape of a rosary where a single rose is put in place of each rosary bead can also be draped from the lid of the casket or placed inside.
Vases and table arrangements are always appropriate. These can go from very simple arrangements to very extravagant arrangements. These are normally sent by friends, business associates, and family members.
Flowers and plants can be a beautiful expression of how to remember the beauty that person has brought to your life.
