10 Steps to Cheaper Homeowners Insurance For Dog Lovers
March 26, 2009
You love your dog, you really do, but let’s face it; if you own one of the many breeds that have made their way to the homeowners insurance “Bad Dog” list you’re going to be paying far more than you need to be for your insurance coverage. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it goes. Insurance companies are trying to cut back on the millions of dollars they pay out every year in claims due to dog bites, and your pup is the one paying the price.
The good news is, there are things you can do to keep your homeowners insurance providers happy and your premiums low. Here are ten easy steps to enjoying cheaper homeowners insurance without having to find your pet a new home:
1) Get your dog spayed/neutered. Before they’re “fixed” dogs are more likely to act out. Even the most docile pup will display its aggressive tendencies in the middle of a hormone induced rush. Having them fixed will go a long way toward settling their temperament and, in turn, making them safer to be around.
2) Put a fence around your backyard. All pets need a safe place to run, and your dog deserves a space where he won’t be plagued day in and day out by children who want to “pet the nice puppy.” Don’t skip out and go electrical, however; that does nothing to keep people and other animals out and might inspire your dog to be willing to brave a little pain to get their teeth on the object of their affection (or aggravation).
3) Enroll your dog in an obedience course. Homeowners insurance providers love dogs that have gone to (and passed) obedience school.
4) Socialize your pet. If your dog is constantly around people they’re going to learn quickly how to act in social situations, minimizing the chances that they’ll lash out in fear and hurt someone.
5) Don’t set your dog up for failure. A dog with a good history looks good on your homeowners insurance application, but when they’re put into a situation where they feel threatened any dog can bite. If you don’t think your dog’s going to feel comfortable where you’re going, leave him at home. It will work out better for both of you in the long run.
6) Play non-aggressive games with your dog. As much fun as it is to play tug-of-war or wrestle with your puppy, that kind of play encourages inappropriate behavior when they’re put in a different setting.
7) Teach your dog to drop their toys on command, minimizing the chances that anyone will be injured when your pet decides to get a little frisky with their property.
Adopt a mutt! Homeowners insurance providers really only worry about purebreds (or almost purebreds). If you can trace your dog’s genes back, you’re probably going to be filling out some paperwork. On the other hand, if your dog has so much traveling salesman in him that he could be related to half the neighborhood you’re probably doing all right.
9) Warn people you have a dog. Dogs are more likely to bite when startled or provoked, and failing to let visitors know you have a pet is a certain recipe for disaster. “Beware of Dog” signs let them know to keep their eyes open when they step into your yard-or better yet, call before they open the gate.
10) Shop around. Different companies have different policies when it comes to dogs. It makes sense to shop around and find one that’s going to be accepting of yours. Any good insurance agent should be able to give you a referral to a homeowners insurance provider that’s known to be “dog friendly” among the insurance community.
